The good days of the taconite industry are over, but the HUGE taconite docks and RR infrastructure once needed to support this once-mighty ore-processing industry remain.
An old and derelict taconite dock built by the Northern Pacific RR in 1922 and closed in 1988 at Loon's Point near Superior WI is a popular place to jump off of among the locals -- but Blasterz were WAYYYYY to chicken to try it.
In 2012 the rail approach (which had afforded easy access to the dock) was demolished, but in 2015 the approach has been paved for boat launching.
The docks can be still accessed by a short lake swim followed by a climb. Most divers jump off at the bottom of the taconite chutes, but the most daring make the harder climb to the top of the loading chutes for the dock, and go into Lake Superior from there.
Blasterz heard many nostalgic stories from locals of long hot summer days spent diving into Lake Superior off the NP Taconite dock, or up at Wisconsin Point. YIKES!
