This compass rose is on the towpath of the Selby Canal and forms the base of a sculpture depicting the history of the canal.

The sculpture takes the form of a cast iron spear shape with panels depicting the history of the canal and area. link

The compass rose is at the base of the sculpture. It shows the four cardinal points and in a circle consisting of metal segments with information about the cargoes carried on the canal and various objects related to this. The inscription on two parts of the circle are as follows.

RUNS 5 1/2 MILES FROM HADDLESEY TO SELBY
CLOTH AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE WERE FIRST CARRIED
