During the 1930s the WPA built thousands of structures in Oklahoma, providing employment for so many families. Most of the structures were government buildings - schools, armories, office buildings, as well as parks.
This tunnel, providing safe underground crossing, was a first to us. The street is named Rock Island Avenue, so it is possible it allowed citizens to cross the railroad track. There is a school one block west of the tunnel, which may also provide a reason for the tunnel.
On the west side of the street, there is a concrete structure, with a box-like top about six feet high. The structure on the east side of the road is smaller. On the side of each structure is engraved "19 WPA 36".
