High Water Marks for Neckar River - Heidelberg, Germany

This bridge support pillar contains markings from many years when the Neckar River overflowed. The highest flood level was attained in 1784.

In addition to the flood level markings on the brick wall, a nearby plaque reads:
Hochwasser
Bedrohten Einst die Stadt
Ein Blick von hier durch das Brückentor zum
Portal der Heiliggeistkirche vermittelt
die Höhe der Wasserflut im Jahre 1784. Sie
vernichtete die frühere Holzbrücke und
überschwemmte den Marktplatz.
Dieses Hochwasser und die bis heute folgenden
sind im alten Maß "badischer Fuß"
an dieser Mauer markiert.

Translated to English, this reads:
Flood Once Threatened the City
A view from here by the Bridge Gate for
Portal gives the Holy Ghost Church
the height of the flood in the year 1784. It
destroyed the former wooden bridge and
flooded the marketplace.
This flood and until today following

marked at this wall.
