The initial funding to start the Jonathan Bourne Public Library was given by the daughter of New Bedford whaling merchant Jonathan Bourne. When the library moved into it's current building, a model of Mr. Bourne's most famous ship was crafted for the weathervane.
A 1/2 scale model of the "Lagoda" is the featured exhibit at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
