The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail is Canada's other great west coast trail. This trail south of Port Renfrew is just as rugged and scenic as the more famous "West Coast Trail" north of Port Renfrew. The difference is this trail has escape routes that allow day hikes and less commitment when backpacking. The Juan de Fuca Marine trail is a 47 km trail along the BC west coast from China Beach near Jordan Rover to Botanical Beach at Port Renfrew. The trail crosses many creeks than have deeply cut through the cliffs. A variety of hikers bridges allow safe crossing of the steep canyons. These range from metal suspension bridges to sturdy wooden bridges with handrails like this one at Ivanhoe Creek to a couple of split logs over smaller creeks.

One example of day use of the Juan De Fuca Marine Trail is a hike down a side trail from the highway to Bear Beach and then hiking back to Mystic Beach to the east. We hiked from Hwy 14 down to Bear Beach and then back to Mystic Beach and up to the China Beach trail head. The trail down to Bear Beach starts 6.6 km along Hwy 14 from the China Beach day use area at a yellow gate for the Rosemond Creek gravel pit. Follow the logging road but look for the hikers track over the embankment on the right. Follow the boot track through the woods finally descend from above Clinch Creek. At Bear Beach we turned left to walk along the boulder beach, then climbing up just past the Rosemond Creek waterfall towards Mystic Beach. This trail section crosses many creeks. The significant bridges waymarked include Ivanhoe, Log, Fatt, Bent, Pat Philips and Peter Wolfe. The track log shows a distance of 10 km and elevation with all the ups and downs at ~600 m.
