The statue was created by artist Sigurjón Ólafsson in 1936. The statue depicts a footballer (or what would be called a soccer player in some countries) in motion with a soccer ball being kicked by his right foot. Only a small portion of his arms are present, perhaps in recognition of the requirement of soccer players to use their feet to strike or pass the ball, and not their hands.
