Completed in 1907, the courthouse was the oldest courthouse in use in Alberta until 1979. It is unique in being the only Richardsonian Romanesque style provincial court building in Alberta. By 1982 it had been repurposed as the Cardston Museum, an excellent use for such a finely crafted old building. It was originally built as a courthouse on the main floor, with jail cells and North West Mounted Police detachment in the basement. The jail cells, as well as many original fixtures, remain.
