The Oklahoma website TravelOK.com highlights the Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum. It is housed in a tribal building constructed in 1844, which is the oldest government building in Oklahoma, and the only one to survive the Civil War. The building was totally refurbished by the Cherokee Nation in 2008 and exists as it did at the beginning.
The purpose of this museum is to display and visually interpret the Cherokee Nation, after it was relocated to Indian Territory following the infamous Trail of Tears. It displays a Nation which survived, adapted, prospered and excels.
Items from the 1840's to the present such as photos, magazines, furniture, clothing and memorabilia bring to life the struggles, defeats and accomplishments of this great Nation of people.
The three areas of focus are the Cherokee National Judicial System, the Cherokee Advocate and Phoenix Newspapers and the Cherokee Language. You will come away amazed at the courage, fortitude and perseverance of the Cherokee Nation.
