Late in the 19th and early in the 20th centuries the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) encouraged their chapters to place drinking fountains in public places to encourage men to drink water and avoid alcohol. A number of these drinking fountains are still in place today. Apparently the fountain has had its intended effect. Ocean City, NJ is now a "dry" city. Alcohol is not sold anywhere within the city limits.

The granite fountain is 5.33' high and 3.33' square foundation. Around the top column is a relief of a draped ribbon with corner bows. The bottom of the column has a water spigot at the left, back, and right sides. The column sits in a wide reservoir basin at the fountain's midsection, with a smaller basin below.

The top of each side spells out WOMEN'S - CHRISTIAN - TEMPERANCE - UNION. Below WOMEN"S on the front is inscribed:

PRESENTED TO
THE CITY
1912

Year built or dedicated as indicated on the structure or plaque: 1912
