The monument is located in the Place of the Patriots, which is in front of the Société des Alcools du Québec offices and the site of the old Pied-du-Courant Prison.
The work of Alfred Laliberté, the Monument aux Patriotes was unveiled on June 24, 1926. On each its three faces a carved bronze medallion represents patriots Chevalier de Lorimier, Louis-Joseph Papineau, and Wolfred Nelson.
The Lower Canada Rebellion, commonly referred to as the Patriots' War (French: la Guerre des patriotes) by Quebeckers, is the name given to the armed conflict between the rebels of Lower Canada (now Quebec) and the British colonial power of that province. Together with the simultaneous Upper Canada Rebellion in the neighbouring colony of Upper Canada (now Ontario), it formed the Rebellions of 1837.
Le monument aux Patriotes est une oeuvre d'Alfred Laliberté, dévoilé le 24 juin 1926. Au sommet du monument se trouve La Liberté aux ailes brisées. Figure ailée, à genoux, la Liberté est représentée, comme le veut la tradition, par un personnage féminin brandissant une chaîne brisée.
"Au cours du printemps et de l'été 1837, les chefs réformistes, dont le principal était Louis-Joseph Papineau, chef du Parti Patriote, ont tiré parti des tensions politiques de longue date pour mettre sur pied une large force rebelle. La situation était tellement tendue qu'en octobre 1837 toutes les troupes britanniques régulières ont été retirées du Haut-Canada et transférées dans le Bas-Canada. Les troupes rebelles ne faisaient pas le poids devant l'importante force militaire coloniale, sous la direction du Général John Colborne, complétée par un grand nombre de miliciens orangistes loyaux venant du Haut-Canada. Les Patriotes rebelles firent face aux troupes et aux milices loyalistes à trois occasions : à Saint-Denis, à Saint-Charles et à Saint-Eustache. La loi martiale fut déclarée et de nombreux rebelles, dont Louis-Joseph Papineau, ont dû s'enfuir aux États-Unis. Des centaines ont été arrêtés, plusieurs ont été déportés en Australie, d'autres furent pendus à la prison au Pied-du-Courant à Montréal." source: (visit link)
