Alongside the hall of fame plaza in front of the Cherokee National Museum, is a marker telling the story of the Cherokee Female Seminary, the first Indian school of higher learning west of the Mississippi. Built in 1851, closed during the Civil War when it was used for storage by the Union Army, it was eventually destroyed by fire on Easter morning 1887.

The "You Are Here" indicator shows that you are standing in front of what used to be that seminary. Today, the only remnants are three brick columns which were part of the original building.
