Born January 19, 1798 in Worcester, MA, he died April 20, 1859 at Park Hill, OK. He was honored with a Cherokee name meaning "One Sent". For thirty-one years he was a missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions Among the Cherokees.
He established a Cherokee newspaper, the "Cherokee Phoenix" and translated the New Testament into the Cherokee language. He stood his ground for Native American sovereignty and was imprisoned for this cause. His case resulted in a United States Supreme Court decision – Worcester v. Georgia, which recognizes tribal sovereignty to the exclusion of State laws.
His headstone stands in the Worcester Mission Cemetery, and reads: "Rev. S.A. Worcester D.D. / For 31 years a missionary of the A.B.C.F.M. among the Cherokees / To his work they owe their Bible and Hymn book. / Died Apr. 1859 / Aged 61"
