"Making the impossible possible... this is the spirit that led Pierre S. du Pont to build his first conservatory so that he could enjoy fresh produce in the winter. Today, that same spirit takes our gardeners and researchers to the far reaches of the globe in search of new and exciting plant species...There’s little doubt that maintaining a garden the size of Longwood is a monumental task. Now imagine having to also raise the plants that are used in these gardens. Few people realize that 75 percent of the plants used in our displays are raised on site. Each year, we produce upward of 110,000 plants that encompass 1,000 different varieties."
