"PSD "JAX" by Artist Janene DiRico-Cable selected for Community Character/Sense of Place Award
February 22, 2015

Town of Castle Rock, Colorado. Representatives from the development community and Planning Commission in Castle Rock, CO have named Police Service Dog (PSD) "Jax", a life-sized bronze sculpture by internationally recognized artist, Janene DiRico-Cable, as "Community Character/Sense of Place" Award Vision 2020.

The memorial sculpture honors of the dedication of all police service dogs nationwide. "Jax" served the residents of Castle Rock from 2002-2008 with over 1,900 deployments for missing persons, illegal drugs and defending fellow officers. "Jax" was favorite among Castle Rock school children, often visiting schools. After his passing in 2010, Castle Rock Police Department officers began fund raising to memorialize all service dogs.

The Committee states: "The design teams found the "Jax" statue represents small town character through recognition of a well-known and highly visible, and well, best stated, "Character" in our community. The bronze sculpture sits prominently in front of the Castle Rock Police Headquarters on Perry Street and creates interest to residents and visitors alike."" (from (visit link) )

"Kuno and Officer Tom O'Donnell

Kuno, Officer O'Donnell's partner
Officer Tom O'Donnell was appointed to the K-9 unit in August 2010. Officer O'Donnell has been with the Castle Rock Police Department since May 2008.

Having a second K-9 officer was made possible from the generous donations the unit received from Ralph and Lorraine Hamilton. Kuno was sworn in as a police officer on Feb. 2, 2007.

Aside from working together, Officer O'Donnell and Kuno live together. Because the pair spend so much time together, a special bond is formed, which is a tremendous asset when working the streets.

The K-9 Unit provides support for all patrol operations. Due to their superior senses and abilities, a properly trained canine can be extremely valuable in situations such as searches, apprehension, evidence location and officer protection.

Ronin and Officer Thompson

Ronin, Officer Thompson's partner
Officer Todd Thompson began his law enforcement career with the Castle Rock Police Department in March 2001.

In 2008, Officer Thompson retired his longtime partner and Town favorite, Jax, after six years of dedicated service. In October 2008, Jax's replacement, Legion, joined the department. After five years of devoted service, Legion was formally retired from the department. Legion continues to live with Officer Thompson.

Ronin, a Belgian Malinois and German shepherd mix, was sworn in as our newest police service dog on August 19, 2014. Ronin was born in 2012 in Denver, Indiana. He also lives with Thompson." (from (visit link) )
