Chillon Chateau www.chillon.ch is one of the most beautiful castles in the world. It is close to Montreux. It has a long and fascinating history. Begun on a rock in the lake in the 11th century it was added to over the years. Its original purpose was to serve as a "toll booth" for the road over the Grand St Bernard pass to Italy. It has turrets, a dungeon, grand reception rooms etc.


From history of Chillon Chateau
10th - 12th century (1000-1160)
Construction started on Chateau De Chillon.
The Bishops ruled
The castle was handed over to the House of Savoy in approximately 1160 after a treaty was made.

12th – 16th century (1160-1536)
The Savoyard ruled Chateau De Chillon.
In 1214 Thomas I of Savoy founded the town of Villeneuve. A place that was big enough to undergo construction, e.g., Toll booths, storage and other port facilities.
During the 13th century the Savoy family conquered a big percentage of the Vaud region.
1189-1233 vital construction work was made to the castle by Peter II of Savoy. This was when the castle was finished.
In 1536 the Bernese conquered the castle, after a treaty was made.

16th- 18th century (1536-1798)
In 1536 the Bernese ruled.
They mostly used it as a prison.
In 1798 patriots from Vevey and Montreux conquered the castle. Once again, a siege was not involved but a treaty was (now commonly known as the Vaud revolution.)

18th-21st century (1798-2011)
In 1798 it was the start of the cantonal period (also known as the Vaudois period)
After the Vaud revolution the castle became national property.
At the end of the 19th century restoration work began.
It is now open to the public for guided tours. It was listed as 'Swizerlands most visited historical monument'.
