This utility box replaces one that featured The Lone Ranger and Tonto, and which was removed some time in the summer of 2015. The box is a burnt orange, more red at the top, more orange near the bottom. The top of the box is plain and blends in with the rest of the pattern. The two short sides do not depict Dean, who is shown on the two long sides, looking up with his hat pushed back on head. Photos like this of Dean show a cigarette, which is nowhere to be found here. The Signal Art Program was implemented in 2007 to enhance the City’s Art in Public Spaces Program. The program works with local artists to design original artwork for traffic signal boxes located throughout the City and serves as an outdoor "gallery" with rotating exhibits that change approximately every three years. The North Richland Hills Signal Art Program was featured on CBS 11 News in June 2014 and has attracted national attention.

The most recent exhibit, entitled “Hollywood Film Cowboys”, was installed in the Fall of 2013 on 10 signal boxes. The theme of classic film cowboys allows residents and visitors to discover western icons of the past as they make their way through the city. The colorful images include variations on the Hollywood portrayal of the hero cowboy from John Wayne to Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman and Yul Brynner.

The “Hollywood Film Cowboy” artist is Cultural Arts Coordinator, Sarah Green. To learn more about Sarah's work, please visit her website. (visit link)

Be on the look out, you never know what you might see at the next NRH intersection! There are currently 16 total signal art boxes in North Richland Hills wrapped with artwork.
