A 5.75' high by 1' square marble figure of a union soldier stands atop a 26' high granite base with a circular shaft and 6.5' square stepped base. The monument is patterned after Hadrian's Column in Rome, Italy. The figure is that of a Union standard bearer. He stands upright looking slightly over his right shoulder. He is wearing a cap, knee-length coat and a cape while his right arm is wrapped around an upright flag. He holds a sheathed sword downward in his left hand.

The monument was fabricated by Carpenter & Raymond and dedicated May 27, 1880. On the lower part of the front of base's is inscribed in raised letters:

TO OUR BROTHERS.
BELOVED, HONORED, REVERED,
WHO DIED THAT
OUR COUNTRY
MIGHT LIVE.

On back of the lower section of the base is inscribed in raised letters:

THE DEFENDERS
- OF -
THE UNION.

Spiraling around the circular column from top to bottom in raised letters is inscribed the following battle sites:
