Built in 1856 for manufacturing cotton, it was originally powered by water from the Mumford River, however steam power was added.

The Linwood Cotton mill was built in 1856 was owned by the Whitin family and produced cotton cloth, specifically fine cameries, sateend and skirtings. Spindle capacity was around 10,000 and increased to 15,000+ in 1875. The mill machinery was driven water from the Mumford River, damned to create the mill pond and the mill raceway. Steam power was installed to supplement the water power.

Today the mill is used for 55+ residents.
