The numerous monuments commemorating the Battle of Waterloo (visit link) .

A well-known place of Waterloo battlefield is also the farm of La-Belle-Alliance. It was at this farm that Blücher and Wellington met after the battle. The Prussians wanted to call the battle of Waterloo "the Battle of La Belle-Alliance" but Wellington favored the more English sounding "Battle of Waterloo."

Close to this farm stand Victor Hugo Column. Hugo was a freethinking republican who considered Napoléon a hero. Hugo was born in 1802, three years after Bonaparte had seized power, declaring “the revolution is over,” and two years before the same general declared France an “empire” and crowned himself Napoleon I. Hugo's father was a high-ranked officer in Napoleon's army until he failed in Spain.

Inscription on pedestal of colum:
"Waterloo ! Waterloo ! Waterloo ! Dismal plain!
Like a wave of water which bubbles over in an overfilled urn.
Within your circle of forests, hills, valleys,
Pale death mingles amongst the melancholic battalions."

These words were written by the famous poet and novelist to whom we also owe numerous writings on Waterloo.
