The Lake Le Homme Dieu historical marker is located on a little wayside pullover along Hwy. 29 near the beach north of Alexandria. The text reads:

Welcome Lake Le Homme Dieu Wayside Rest.

Lake Le Homme Dieu is the second largest lake in the Alexandria chain of lakes with an area of 1,800 acres. It connects to Lake Carlos to the north and Lake Geneva to the south. This chain also includes Lake Victoria, Lake Darling, Lake Cowdry, Taylor Lake, Stony Lake and North Union Lake. The lakes are connected by a series of channels that makes them all accessible to one another by boat.

The lakes in this area were naturally formed thousands of years ago during the last major ice age in west central Minnesota. As glaciers retreated they cleared the once heavily wooded area and left huge chunks of ice that melted to form lakes. The glacial drift also created boulders that settlers used to build foundations and walls for their homes and barns when they began arriving to the area in the late 1800’s.
