Munn Park is the historic center of downtown, and since 1908 has been named for city father Abraham Godwin Munn, in recognition of his donation of land for the park. The Lakeland Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy dedicated this monument in the center of Munn Park in 1910. The unnamed soldier faces east.
The monument is inscribed on three sides, to a height of approximately six feet. The east face includes crossed Confederate flags, the dates 1861 and 1865, and the words "Confederate Dead".
The north side of the monument is inscribed:
This monument was erected
by the Lakeland Chapter,
United Daughters
of the Confederacy
in memory of the noble
sons of the South.
A.D. 1910.
The south side of the monument is inscribed:
In memory of that noble band,
who have crossed the mystic
stream,
and are resting now in that
happy land,
where peace and pleasure
reign supreme.
The heroic deeds will never
fade,
from memory's brightest page,
and their brave defense of
country and home,
is left as a glorious heritage.
