In early settlers of colonial Massachusetts were required by law to attend both town meetings and weekly Congregational church services, often utilizing the same building. Originally, West Springfield, MA was the first parish of Springfield, MA. In compliance with the law, a Congregational church was established in present day West Springfield in 1698.

In 1870, many West Springfield residents decided to move Congregational services from the Meetinghouse to a new site near the town common. A committee was formed and in 1872 the First Congregational Church was erected. The Victorian Gothic style church was designed by architects Perkins and Gardner and Harry L. Sprague. It features a slate roof, and a brick, stone and glass façade. The circular stained glass window facing Park Street has become the iconic, identifying feature of the church.
