Though tulips are annual plants, the city of Holland re-plants the Windmill Island field and beds across the city each year to ensure that the bulbs yield a perfect display.
The city typically replaces about 50 percent of its tulip bulbs annually.
The city imports its bulbs from the Netherlands, purchasing them from Dutch company, UNEX Inc who is also the supplier of tulips for the White House and the Pentagon.
For the preservation of this locality, collection or picking is prohibited.
