"The pump on the property is a Columbian pitcher pump. It differs little, if at all, from a pitcher pump of 1939. In 1892 the pump was essentially the same design. It probably cost about $1.45 and was available by mail order from Montgomery Ward & Company, or from local hardware stores like Treman, King & Company...The water in the well has not been tested for bacteria. The water in springtime is within 6 feet of the surface. It's fine to use for washing your hands or just for the fun of pumping it (within reason), but we strongly suggest that no one drink the water. In addition to being a potential health hazard, you might find it tasted strongly of sulphur as is common in many wells in this area. The houses and businesses here no longer use wells but have water piped in from Bolton Point."
