Cette structure d’acier est à l’entrée du Canal Soulanges, côté ouest, en provenance du Lac Saint-François et des Pays d’En-Haut, en direction du Lac Saint-Louis et par la suite, vers Montréal. En réalité, ce bâtiment est un feu d’alignement antérieur ou haut. Celui-ci est jumelé avec le feu d’alignement postérieur ou bas de Les Coteaux, autrefois Coteau-Landing. À cette époque, ces endroits étaient déboisés afin que les deux feux soient visibles en tout temps.
Ces feux d’alignement de plus formaient un axe lequel guidait les bateaux entrant dans le Canal Soulanges. Lorsque le commandant du bateau en provenance du Lac Saint-François voyait ces deux feux alignés, ceci voulait dire qu’il était dans la bonne direction vers l’entrée du canal et pouvait avancer sans crainte.
On Thomas Monro's place stands a cylindrical tower called "The Lighthouse of Coteau-du -Lac." This steel structure is at the entrance of Soulanges Canal, west side, from Lake Saint-François and Les Pays d'en-Haut to Lake St.Louis and subsequently to Montreal.
This structure is paired with rear range light or low Les Coteaux, formerly Coteau-Landing. At that time, these places were cleared so that the two lights are visible at all times.
These more leading lights formed a line which guided vessels entering the Soulanges Canal. When the commander of the boat from the Lake St. Francis saw two lights aligned, this meant that he was in the right direction towards the channel entrance and could move forward without fear.
