This plaque is dedicated to Battery I, 4th U. S. Artillery, commanded by 1st Lieut. Frank G. Smith is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on the afternoon of Sept. 20, 1863.

Text on the plaque reads:
Battery I, 4th U. S. Artillery.
4 light 12 Pdrs.
Van Derver’s Brigade, Brannan’s Division, Thomas’ Corps.
Sept. 20, 1863. Noon
1st Lieut. Frank G. Smith, Commanding.
1st Lieut. George B. Rodney.
2nd Lieut. John M. Stephenson.

Soon after the union line was pierced near Brotherton’s southeast of this position, about 1:15 AM, and the enemy advanced in heavy columns through the gap, and changed direction to assault this Ridge, this section in charge of Lieut. Rodney, which had been engaged with the battery near the Snodgrass house, came to this position under orders of Gen. Brannan, who was actively engaged in rallying the flying infantry and forming line on this hill. The section performed efficient service in establishing this line, and after about an hour rejoined its battery near the Snodgrass house, participating with it in all subsequent engagements there until the close of the battle.

Note
Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
