The town:

Hégenheim is municipality in the French region Alsace with a population of about 3300.

It was probably founded in the Franconian era. In the late middle ages Hégenheim was property of the prince-bishop of Basel and was given as a fief to the Bärenfels, who kept it until the year 1700. In 1703 it became a part of France, some years later than the rest of the Alsace region.

From the 17th to the 19th century Hégenheim was a local center of Jewish culture, a synagogue was built in 1723, destroyed in 1815 and rebuilt in 1821. The Jewish cemetery, founded in 1673, contains about 8,000 graves. With the dawn of religious freedom, many Jewish citizens moved to the larger cities in the 19th century.

The town had some important watch industry in the early 20th century, the last watch factory closed in 1963. Today most of the inhabitants commute to the economic centers in the area, the majority to Basel.

The town hall:

The town hall is an three story office building in the town center. It shares the location with the post office and a hair dresser. The building is standard architecture of the mid-20th century without any remarkable features.
