About 30% of electricity consumption in the Czech Republic is covered by production in nuclear power plants. At several locations in the Czech Republic is also mined an uranium ore. One of these places where uranium ore has been mined was Hamr mine beside small town Straz pod Ralskem.
Mining took place from 1972 to 1993. Mining at the Hamr I mine was terminated from 1994 until 1995 and the mine was conserved. Dismantling began in 1995, and the technical dismantling of the underground was finished in 2001. Mining at the Hamr II mine was never initiated and the mine was dismantled in 1988. Hamr I had four shafts and 68 km of horizontal tunnels where mining was conducted to a depth of 160 m beneath the surface.
The mine’s underground has been dismantled and the open mine shafts have been filled with solidifying earth – the sub-surface is emitting heat (until approx. 2015). The mine’s surface structures, central decontamination station, base centers and other unusable structures have been prepared for dismantling. The processing facility has been dismantled and some of the processing structures are being used as rehabilitation facilities for chemically mined sites. The tailings impoundment is prepared for other uses in relation to remediation operations at the Stráž site.
