The Pont des Arts, a pedestrian bridge over the River Seine linking the Institut de France and the Palais du Louvre, was the first tourist location in Paris that visitors used to attach their love locks.
The custom originally started in Rome in 2006, and became popular on this bridge in 2008. However, not everyone agrees with this relatively recent tradition.
Authorities and some residents in Paris have long considered the locks a nuisance that hinders views and damages the architecture of the bridge.
On the 30th May 2015 authorities started removing the locks, claiming the weight of the locks was damaging the fencing and posing a safety risk to visitors.
Glass panels will replace the fencing, ensuring that no more locks can be attached by love-struck tourists.
