The Karl G Jansky Very Large Array is a radio astronomy telescope located west of Socorro New Mexico. It is made up of 27 antennae; each is roughly 80 feet in diameter and are arranged on a “Y” shaped track. The purpose of the instrument is to investigate astronomical objects like quasars, supernova, and black holes to name a few. In 2012 the VLA was renamed "Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array". After ten year project to upgrade the 1970 electronics to state of the art equipment the capabilities of the array was increased by a factor of 8000. The VLA in NM is one of five National Radio Astronomy Observatories (NRAO) in the US.
