James Giles entered the Continental Army sometime prior to 1776. In March 1776, he was appointed Lieutenant in the 2d or New York Regiment of Artillery, continued in service until 1782. At that time he put his military on hold to pursue his law profession. In 1793 he returned briefly to the military and was commissioned a Brigadier General in the Cumberland Brigade of the New Jersey militia. He continued his practice of law in Bridgeton, New Jersey until his death on July 23, 1825.
