During the Revolutionary War approximately 30,000 Hessian soldiers fought for the British as mercenaries. Of these approximately 5000 stayed and lived in the United States or Canada following the war. Jacob Henry Bitter was one of these. What makes his grave appeared to be somewhat out of place is the cemetery is the final resting place of several Continental Army veterans, both enlisted and officer.
