Northeast Texas may be populated with more pine trees than people, but at three in the afternoon, this small shack, located about a quarter mile off Main Street, was brimming with locals ordering the hickory-smoked brisket, served in a broth of beef juices and savory barbecue sauce. The crackly crust on the wet-rubbed pork ribs was a perfect complement to the tender, pink meat below the surface. Skip the mushy potato salad.

They aren't kidding with that decor crack, as this really is a proverbial BBQ shack in small town Texas. They're also not kidding about the visits from the locals, which are pretty constant even into the evening hours. You're going to order at the counter, and if you're dining in, they'll bring your food to you when it's ready (and be sure to leave a little tip for your server, as service here is pretty good). You have a choice of brisket (sliced or chopped), ribs, hot links, sausage, pulled pork, or a burger. The barbecue is available by the half pound or pound, but they also offer plates with sides (beans, slaw, potato salad), combo plates, and sandwiches. They also have tamales, which are nearly as popular (and as tasty) as their barbecue. Soft drinks and tea are available to drink, and they've got pie for dessert. Those looking to go on the cheap can get a burger for about $4.50, but c'mon, you're in a barbecue joint: Go for a BBQ sandwich for about a dollar more. There's no "pig out" option per se, but you always have the option of buying more food at the pound price. A dozen tamales is $11.16.
