William Smith spent most of his life in Cumberland County New Jersey. He was born in either 1739 or 1740. I was not able to find much of his Revolutionary War service however is grave is marked by the Daughters of the American Revolution as a veteran of the war. After the war he accumulated extensive landholdings in Cumberland County which was passed to his six sons upon his death in 1806.
