Nikolaus August Otto was a German Engineer. His most known idea is the principle of the four-stroke engine. This type of engine is named 'Otto-Motor'(Ottos-engine) in German.
Nikolaus Otto was born in Holzhausen on 10. June 1832. He died in Cologne in the year 1891.
In 1862 he started building the first engines. In 1876 the first engine using the four-stroke-principle was build by him. This type of engine was used by Carl Benz to build the first automobile in 1886. Today most of the engines in cars having an engine of this type.
The building is today used as museum presenting Ottos invention. It is opened from 10:00 to 16:00 except on Wednesday. For more information please consult the web-page.
