Cherokee City IS the past: rows of weather beaten gift shops accessible only by a scenic road system. If you want to know what vacations were really like in the 1950s, visit Cherokee.
That's the one half of Cherokee then there is the other side of the tracks, the massive, modern Casino.
"The Cherokee Reservation Craft Shop may no longer be in business (we never seem to find anyone there) or just hibernating. But that's not the fault of its sign, a hand-painted profile of the unmistakable Chief Henry, "World's Most Photographed Indian." Chief Henry plied his trade in downtown Cherokee as a living photo-op for over 50 years until his death in 2007. His image is on snapshots across the globe, so it's good to see one in Cherokee, too.
