The park gardener that created the park in 1803 was Stephan Freiherr von Stengel. The initiator and founder of the park was the bavarian king Maximilian I Joseph.
The park is projected on the concept of English Garden. One of its part is the Botanical Garden. Inside the park, there are numerous gazebos, shrines and monuments.
In literature, the park is commemorated by E.T.A. Hoffman in his story about the speaking dog Berganza.
