This cemetery was opened in 1741 under the name "Neuer Kirchhof vor dem Aegidientor" ("New Cemetery before Aegidientor"), but was popularly called Gartenfriedhof (Garden Cemetery), because of the many gardens outside of Hannover.
It was closed 1864.
After building the actual Gartenkirche (Garden Church) 1891 it was renamed to Gartenfriedhof.
