Interestingly, Canada's Parliamentary grounds were designed by an American, Clavert, Vaux, in 1873. Given that the countries had been through the War of 1812 this was a bit of a surprise.
Even today the grounds are little changed in design from Vavux's creation. The main grassy area is used daily in the summer months for the changing of the Guard ceremony at 10:00am and statues of significant figures in the creation and development of Canada surround the Parliament Buildings. Of special interest are the statue of Lester B. Pearson on the west side whose shoe is polished to a bright shine from those touching it for luck and the suffragete statues on the East side commemorating the declaration of women as persons in the 1920's.
