We dedicate our 1000th waymark to our travel mascot and the namesake of our geocaching name: Bernd das Brot.

Bernd the Bread (or Bernd das Brot in German) is star of one of Germany's most popular TV series. The show has been running for 15 years now and has been awarded a number of German TV prices.

Bernd's popularity in Germany can be compared to that of, for example, Kermit's popularity in America. However, if Kermit is famous for always being upbeat, Bernd is the opposite: he is severely pessimistic and depressed, which, we are sorry to say, is a main ingredient of the German soul. His outlook on life comes in quotes like "My only hope is that it won't get worse. But it will. Every time you think it can't get any worse - it gets worse. Worse than worse. Worser worse."

Words like "Worser worse" (schlimmerschimm) have become common German phrases, testament to the popularity of this odd character.

The "Bernd das Brot" TV Show is aired on KI.KA (Kinder-Kanal = Children's Channel) which has its headquarters in Erfurt, Thuringia. The statue was dedicated by KI.KA as a thank you to the City at the 10th anniversary of the TV-Channel on July 8, 2007. It is located next to the town hall, at a side door, which hosts an office of the TV Channel.

In 2009, a group of pranksters kidnapped the statue. They even left a video on youtube (unfortunately no longer available) in which Bernd claimed having developed Stockholm Syndrom and asked the authorities to not to rescue him, because "anything is better than being a TV-Host."

He was eventually discovered weeks later in an abandoned building and returned to the TV-station. And so, his nightmare continues...
