The boulder was placed here in 1959 to commemorate one hundred years of scientific advancement by the Royal Society of Victoria. The Society has always had a special interest in Antartic exploration and research.
The Royal Society of Victoria was formed in 1859 by the amalgamation of the Philosophical Society of Victoria and the Victorian Institute for the Advancement of Science, which had been in existence since 1854.

The Antarctic Division of the Department of External Affairs transported this boulder from Mawson, which was Australia's first station in Antartica.
Mawson, on the west coast, was named after Australian-based explorer Douglas Mawson who first experienced Antartica in Shackleton's 1907 Nimrod expedition.

Even though the boulder has significant symbolism, and is on public display in the streets of Melbourne's CBD, it remains one of Australia's little-known "gems".
