An der Hauptwache steht die Skulptur "David und Goliath" des Bildhauers Richard Heß. Die Bronzefigur ist leicht abgesenkt, so daß die Fußgänger die Skulptur aus einem erhöhten Blickwinkel betrachten. Die Bronzefigur besitzt mit ihren 4,60 Meter Höhe und einem Gewicht von 6 Tonnen beeindruckende Ausmaße.
David sitzt auf dem abgetrennten Haupt Goliaths. Er trägt einen Helm auf dem Kopf und hält eine Steinschleuder in der Hand. Die Figuren sollen Kultur und Zivilisation (David) sowie im Gegensatz dazu die rohe Natur (Goliath) versinnbildlichen. Goliaths Haupt ruht auf einem stark zerklüfteten Untergrund, der einen Felsen darstellen soll. Auf der Fußgängerzone der Zeil, mit ihrer streng symmetrischen Anordnungen von Bäumen, Laternen und geometrischen Pflastersteinen konnte sich, laut Heß, nur eine "formenreiche" und "vitale" Plastik behaupten.

David war laut den Büchern Samuel und des Alten Testaments der Bibel König von Juda und König von Israel. Er lebte etwa von 1040-970 v. Chr, war König von Juda von etwa 1010-1002 v. Chr, und herrsche 1002-970 v.Chr über die Vereinigten Königreiche Israel.

David sits on the severed head of Goliath. He wears a helmet on his head and is holding a slingshot in hand. The figures are intended to represent the culture and civilization (David) and, in contrast, the crude nature (Goliath). Goliath's head rests on a highly rugged surface that is supposed to represent a rock. On the pedestrian area of Zeil, with its strictly symmetrical arrangements of trees, lanterns and geometric paving stones, according to Hess, only a "form-rich" and "vital" plastic could contend.

David was, according to the books of Samuel an the Old Testament King of Judah and King of the United Kingdom of Israel. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040–970 BC, his reign over Judah c. 1010–1002 BC, and his reign over the United Kingdoms of Israel c. 1002–970 BC.
