L’usage du pont en bois, bâti en 1853 en remplacement du bac, est interdit en 1896 suite à la rupture d’un madrier en chêne constituant le tablier, sous le passage d’une lourde charrette. L’actuel pont-levis métallique datant de 1901 supporte une charge de 10 t. Sa partie mobile permet de laisser passer les bateaux qui jadis empruntaient 9 barrages-écluses de Niort à Marans afin d’exporter du sel, du vin, des anguilles et de la poterie.
