The municipal theater of Colmar is located on Rue Kléber, just next to the famous Unterlinden Museum.
The elegant building with five bays on the ground and the upper floor was created by architect Louis-Michel Boltz; the interior design and the ceiling paintings are from the artist Boulangé. It opened in 1849 and was the first theater in Upper Alsace. The theater has been renovated several times, the last time was 1999/2000.
Today the theater hosts about 100 events per year with about 35,000 visitors. Next to their own productions, the théâtre municipal also hosts productions of different other ensembles like the Opéra national du Rhin, the Ballet du Rhin and concerts and shows by a number of local organizations.
