Made from 1935 - 1945, Cockshutts of that era were actually Made by Oliver in Charles City, Iowa. Most Cockshutts wore red and cream paint instead of the Oliver Green, though some were sold wearing green with cream wheels and grille, and the sheet metal was a bit different, but underneath they were identical.

The 70, and all Cockshutt models of the time, came in three flavours, the Row-Crop, with a tricycle chassis, the Orchard, with a low-profile, and this model, the Standard, with standard chassis. Power was provided by a six cylinder gasoline engine of 201.3 ci (3.3 L). Rated as a 2 plow tractor, it produced 19.84 drawbar hp and 27.79 hp at the belt at Nebraska Tractor Tests. Weight was 3,300 pounds. The transmission used was a bog standard 4 forward and 1 reverse gear unit.

Though the Oliver 70 continued in production until 1948, Cockshutt began making its own tractors in 1946, the first line of modern farm tractors manufactured in Canada. The origins of the company's agricultural business can be traced to the 1870s and various businesses operated by the Cockshutt family. The Cockshutt Plow Company was registered in 1910. The company's tractor manufacturing operations were acquired by White Motor Company (later to be White Tractor) in 1961.
