The 13 foot high Smiling Peanut was sent to Plains by, Loretta Townsend, Doyle Kifer, and James Kiley of Evansville, Indiana who were Democratic Friends of President Jimmy Carter when he was running for President. The Peanut is made from wooden
hoops, chicken wire, aluminum foil and polyurethane. After the "peanut" textured outside was finished; it was painted a peanut color. Today, the smiling peanut has been weatherized and set outside on highway 45 about one-half mile north of Plains. Most visitors to Plains eventually find their way here for a quick photo.
