Anlässlich der Befreiungsfeiern Anfang Mai 1948 wurde der Grundstein eines Denkmals in Form eines Sarkophags auf dem Appellplatz des früheren KLM gelegt.
Als zentrales Monument wird am ehemaligen Appellplatz ein Sarkopharg mit lateinischer Inschrift: „Aus der Toten Geschick mögen lernen die Lebenden“ errichtet.

Das Konzentrationslager Mauthausen war das größte Konzentrationslager der Nationalsozialisten auf dem Gebiet Österreichs, der damaligen Donau- und Alpenreichsgaue. Es befand sich 20 Kilometer östlich von Linz in Mauthausen und bestand vom 8. August 1938 bis zu seiner Auflösung nach der Befreiung seiner Insassen durch US-amerikanische Truppen am 5. Mai 1945. Im KZ Mauthausen und seinen Nebenlagern sind rund 100.000 Menschen ums Leben gekommen. Auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Konzentrationslagers befindet sich seit 1947 eine Mahn- und Gedenkstätte der Republik Österreich.
