This monument to the 88th Indiana Infantry Regiment, commanded by Col. George Humphrey is in recognition of their service during the during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. This monument marks their position at 5:00 pm on September 19, 1863. There are three monuments to the 88th Indiana Infantry Regiment on the battlefield.

to her
Eighty-eighth Regiment Infantry.
Col. George Humphrey, commanding.
First Brigade (John Beatty).
Second Division (Negley).
Fourteenth Corps (Thomas).
On Sept. 19, 1863, up to 5 P.M., this Regiment was in the vicinity of Glass’ Mill, where with its brigade it supported Brigdes’ and part of Schultz’s batteries in an engagement with the enemy. In the evening it moved to the Brotherton place and bivouacked. On Sunday morning, September 20, it moved with its brigade to this position where the brigade being assailed by the brigades of Adams and Stovall, was broken, and the Regiment forced southwestward toward Snodgrass Hill. It there took position in support of General Negley’s artillery, and afterwards accompanied this officer to Rossville.

Short Physical Description
9' x 6' x 15' high, the Indiana oolitic limestone monument has a two-step rock-faced base and a smooth-faced, inscribed shaft with a bronze state seal. Castellated capstone is topped by carved acorn finial.
