As described by the Coast and Geodetic Survey ("CGS") back in 1959:
"1.4 MI SW FROM HOUSTON. ABOUT 0.4 MILE EAST ALONG U. S. HIGHWAY 90 FROM THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD STATION AT HOUSTON, THENCE ABOUT 1.0 MILE SOUTH-SOUTHWEST ALONG MAIN STREET, AT THE INTERSECTION OF PEASE STREET, 49 FEET WEST-NORTHWEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF MAIN STREET, 39 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF PEASE STREET, SET VERTICALLY IN THE NORTH FACE OF THE JIM STUART APARTMENT BUILDING, 3 1/2 FEET WEST OF THE NORTHEAST CORNER, AND ABOUT 2 1/2 FEET ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE SIDEWALK."
With the exception of the apartment building's current name (it is now "Beaconsfield Condominiums" due to it reverting back to its original name, see the associated
NRHP waymark listing), the 1959 description is still quite accurate and should definitely assist future seekers in finding this benchmark -- alternatively, one can use the gallery images during any future attempt at recovery.
Also, as accurately noted on the benchmark's associated NGS Data Sheet log entry:
"[2014] MARK HAS BEEN STUCCOED OVER AND THEN PAINTED. ENOUGH HAS BEEN SCRAPED OFF TO READ THE STAMPING."
Only a small portion of the actual disk is currently visible (the stamping in the middle), and as such it cannot be fully confirmed whether this is/was truly a "bench mark disk" or a "vertical control mark" given its position on the wall.
Last but not least, the NGS recorded coordinates still seem to be a little off, at least at the time of this waymark's posting. Its most recent associated NGS Data Sheet still reports it as "N 29 45 06.51 W 095 22 09.12" (i.e. "N 29° 45.108 W 095° 22.152"), which is ~40 ft away and points to a location NE from the actual BM, somewhere on the center line of Pease Street. The actual coordinates -- as measured within 10' accuracy and 10+ reading averages -- are "N 29° 45.103 W 095° 22.156".
